Can Wolfsburg Keep Draxler? I doubt It...
Draxler has had a pretty good Euros so far. Finally showing the world that he is worth at least a bit of the hype that was around him when at Schalke. Why he didn't start against Italy is a discussion behind closed door that myself and Joachim will have to have. That being said, Draxler has been one of the bright spots so far which is great news for Germany, but not so much for Wolfsburg.
Why, you ask? Shouldn't Hecking be jumping up and down and doing the macarena as one of his own players is strutting his bad self on the big stage? Yeah....no. You see, Wolfsburg are not Bayern Munich or Real Madrid or Chelsea. They're small potatoes in comparison to those clubs, so the better that Draxler plays the more likely a De Bruyne situation will take place.
Take a look at last season, where Wolfsburg were horrible and doing their best to reach for relegation with both hands, Draxler was their best player. It's always a very good sign of a player who manages to stand out from the murk around him. I think that was a great stepping stone for him to do what he's done at these Euros, and he should only get better. But I must repeat myself, this is not good news for Wolfsburg.
What Hecking must try and do is gain Draxler's trust. Tying him down, literally, would be an idea but I think that might be illegal in Germany. He needs to do something to keep this kid, because in order for any club to do well, you need those special players. Even Leicester, when they did the impossible to win the Premier League, they had a special player in Mahrez who played a starring role in making their dreams come true.
The evidence is there. Once De Bruyne decided to take his talents to Manchester, Wolfsburg crumbled and spiralled down the league table. This was a team that finished second and won the German cup. Just goes to show that yes, this is still a team game but there are instances where that one individual can be the difference between the top four or seventh place.
I cannot imagine where Wolfsburg would have fallen to if they didn't have Draxler. He's pretty much their only creative player and their most gifted on the ball. I think overall as of now, De Bruyne is far more productive than the Drax hence why his departure was felt so heavily, but the young German leaving Wolfsburg would be a total disaster. It's hard for a club like them to find and lure really good players.
Secretly Hecking will be hoping Draxler isn't picked any longer for these Euros or he gets an injury. A bit harsh to wish such ill on anyone but in Hecking's case, it's justified, if only for long enough until the Bundesliga starts again. These are the kinds of tournaments that scouts go to, in search of that one vital player they can get for good money that none of their competitors know about. I can assure you, Draxler is already on their shortlist.
Wolfsburg cannot afford to lose the him, but if that huge payday comes swinging in like Indiana Jones...HH
