Red Bull Leipzig MUST Start Second Half with a WIN over Frankfurt
The Bundesliga is the only top league in the world, where the first game after the winter break has a lot of meaning.
This is simply because of how long it is in comparison to the ones in Italy and Spain and how that length can affect the concentration or rhythm of some teams.
After Red Bull's exceptional first half of the season, they ended it with an expected loss to the might of Bayern Munich. But if they really want to produce a fairytale ending, then their first game after the long break against Frankfurt has to be with a win.
Be warned, this isn't the Frankfurt of last season who were nowhere near the top half. They are currently fourth and being coached beautifully by Niko Kovac. So Red Bull are going up against a team in the purest sense of the word.
It's almost as if they are facing a mirror of themselves. A group that have no superstars, but rely on simple, sensible football and the unit all chipping in to move the team forward.
Whether Red Bull will last the distance is hard to say, but this first half of the Bundesliga has been a funny one. Who would have expected my pick for the title, Dortmund, to languish down in sixth? Or for Hertha Berlin and Hoffenheim to be in the top five?
So maybe it's one of those seasons, where Bayern under the new management of Ancelotti and struggling to begin with, where something miraculous can happen.
Any chance of that coming to fruition starts this weekend where Red Bull host Frankfurt. Because if they were to lose this game, the first after the break, that would be two losses back-to-back in the league and suddenly the mindset of the players could be affected and a slump could arise.
It won't be an easy game, and getting geared up to start playing at that high level after such a long time off, trying to run off the Christmas and New Year wine will be the challenge.
But they have to believe because it's been the boys from Leipzig who have made this Bundesliga watchable. Everyone thought it would be Dortmund challenging Bayern, but now Tuchel's boys look like they have taken this year off to challenge for the title. And it's been Leipzig, who are writing an incredible footballing story, and the ones who are trying to match Bayern step for step.
Good luck to David as he goes up against Goliath, good luck to the underdogs, and I am excited to see just how far they can push Bayern Munich for the title.
